Speaker Biographies

 

Richard Anderson

Freelance since 1976, Richard Anderson is an advertising/corporate photographer based in Baltimore, MD. He has produced photographic assignments for a wide range of clients literally around the globe. Richard traded his film cameras for digital cameras in 1999 and now uses a totally digital workflow. Richard has given numerous seminars and has written magazine articles on digital workflow and quality issues.

 

Richard is an ASMP National Board Member and the chair of the ASMP Digital Standards Committee. He is the principle author of the Universal Digital Imaging Guidelines (see UPDIG.org). Richard is the project leader of a Library of Congress-funded project tasked with expanding and promoting best practices for digital image workflow and digital image preservation.

Susan Carr is a Chicago-based photographer and has been in business for over twenty years. Her photographs are included in corporate and private collections, most notably the Pfizer Corporation and the Museum of Contemporary Photography. A past president of ASMP, Susan has long been dedicated to the advocacy and education of fellow photographers. Susan organized and managed the highly successful ASMP Strictly Business 2 conferences and currently serves as Education Director at ASMP. Susan is the editor of the latest ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography (2008), published by Allworth Press and is currently working on her own book, The Art and Business of Photography, scheduled for publication in 2011.

 

Blake Discher

Detroit photographer and educator Blake Discher specializes in people photography for leading editorial publications and Fortune 500 corporations for advertising and annual reports throughout the world. His clients include General Motors, Chrysler, American Airlines and Oracle. Blake also consults for small businesses on search engine optimization. He shares his knowledge with students and other photographers through his involvement with the American Society of Media Photographers, most recently as an educator in ASMP's successful Strictly Business 2 conferences. A professional photographer for 20 years, he shares his home with his wife Lesley and his five-year-old son Blake. When not working, he's usually tinkering with one of his British-made vintage Triumph automobiles.

Judy Herrmann is a past president of the ASMP, an Olympus Visionary and recipient of the United Nation's IPC Leadership Award. As a partner in Herrmann+Starke, she creates visually compelling still life and lifestyle images. Her work has won acclaim from Lurzer's Archive, Graphis, PDN/Nikon Self-Promotion Awards, How International Design Annuals and Pix Digital Annuals and has been featured in numerous industry publications including Communication Arts, How, and Digital Photo Pro. A widely quoted expert, she has lectured extensively on digital photography and business practices since 1995. As a consultant, she helps photographers and other creative service providers develop a creatively and financially satisfying business.

 

Todd Joyce

Cincinnati photographer Todd Joyce of Joyce Photography has been working as a commercial photographer since 1991, specializing in people photography on location for concepts in advertising and corporate photography. Todd has received many awards for his work including a National Addy, as well as an award from Kodak. His work has been displayed in the Nikon Gallery in NY and has been seen in publications such as Rolling Stone. Clients over the years include Kodak, Proctor & Gamble, Chiquita, Johnson and Johnson, 5/3rd Bank, General Electric, Hobart, and many hospitals and various companies. Active in the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), Todd is the immediate past president of ASMP and is currently serving on the national board of directors as 1st Vice President, Membership Chair, Ethics Committee Chair, Board Member of the ASMP Foundation and the Chair of the Governance Committee.

 

Richard Kelly

Richard Kelly is a Pittsburgh-based editorial and corporate photographer creating environmental portraits with style. Currently, the President of Richard Kelly Photography and an educator at the Pittsburgh Filmmakers, from 2003 to 2007 Richard was the Director of Photography for WQED Multimedia. Now serving as President of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), he is also a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Society of Photographic Educators.

 

Jay Kinghorn

Prolific author, provocative speaker and Adobe Photoshop Certified Expert trainer Jay Kinghorn uses his unique skill to help companies and organizations strengthen their workflow processes and envision creative uses for photography. His company, RGB Imaging, works with clients to develop automated workflows for print, Web and interactive marketing.

 

As an Olympus Visionary photographer, Jay uses his unique eye to capture the ever-changing landscape of the West and sports like mountain biking and rock climbing. He also presents internationally to various universities, trade associations and will be the primary speaker for ASMP’s Preserving Digital Images Standards and Workflow Project.

 

The second edition of his book, Perfect Digital Photography, which he co-authored with Pulitzer-prize winner Jay Dickman, was released in June 2009.

 

Peter Krogh

Peter Krogh is the author of The DAM Book (O’Reilly, 2009), the most widely used reference on collection management for photographers. He travels the world, advising photographers, institutions and major companies on best practices in digital imaging. Peter lives in Washington DC area, where he operates a photography, consulting and digital media production company. He was one of two principal authors of the dpBestflow.org website. Eugene Mopsik

Eugene Mopsik has a distinguished history working as a tireless advocate for photographers. Mopsik currently serves as the Executive Director of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) where since 2003 he has overseen the society’s largest membership growth, as well as the expansion of its industry influence and legislative impact.

 

Under Mopsik’s leadership, ASMP played a key role in Congressional discussions related to Orphan Works legislation, is leading the visual artist opposition to the proposed Google Settlement initiated by the Author’s Guild and the Association of American Publishers, received a Library of Congress Preserving Digital Imaging Award, launched the completely redesigned and expanded ASMP.org, and presents annually over fifty educational programs to photographers, artists and users.

 

Mopsik currently serves on the boards of the Copyright Alliance, the Picture Licensing Universal System (PLUS) Coalition, the Eddie Adams Workshop and on the Advisory Board of the Young Photographers Alliance (YPA).

 

Prior to his position at ASMP, Mopsik was a successful Philadelphia corporate/industrial photographer, served on the ASMP board of directors and, in 2000/01, was the society’s President. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Economics.

 

Victor Perlman

Victor Perlman has served as General Counsel to ASMP since 1995 and as in-house General Counsel and Managing Director since leaving private practice in 1996. He has been an attorney since 1972 and has served on the Boards of Directors of the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), the Media Photographers Copyright Agency, Inc., and the Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.

 

Mr. Perlman has frequently appeared as an author in various publications, including Communication Arts and Popular Photography and has taught numerous Continuing Legal Education seminars. He is the co-author of Licensing Photography, published by Allworth Press. He has testified in Congressional hearings and in hearings and other proceedings held by the U.S. Copyright Office and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He has filed amicus curiae briefs in landmark cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal appellate courts. He frequently lectures on issues related to copyright law and other issues relating to photography.

 

Mr. Perlman received his bachelor’s degree in English from Franklin & Marshall College in 1967 and his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972. Before entering private practice, he served as law clerk to the Honorable D. Donald Jamieson, then President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia.

 

Christopher Reese

Christopher J Reese is an attorney and the author of ASMP Social Media Terms of Service Recommendations. He is the former General Counsel and Executive Vice President for SightSound Technologies, the company that pioneered the movie and music download business. Among other firsts, SightSound sold the first downloadable music in the world in 1995 and rented and sold the first full-length, downloadable films in 1999. Chris also served as the personal manager of the rock band the Gathering Field, which was signed to Atlantic Records and Polygram Publishing. Along the way, he became well-versed in intellectual property law and other issues unique to the entertainment and media industries. His public speaking began in the adversarial setting of Washington D.C. courtrooms where he was a federal prosecutor. He’s glad to have moved on to the more communal setting of discussing the intellectual property issues surrounding the creative process. Although he readily admits that any quality photographs he’s captured have been pure luck, he does hope to publish a book he has just finished. Chris also speaks on topics related to science and religion.

 

Jeff Sedlik

Jeff Sedlik is the President and CEO of the PLUS Coalition. He is also the past National President of the Advertising Photographers of America and serves on numerous boards.

 

With eighteen years of experience as a leading advertising, editorial, and fine art photographer, Jeff works out of studios in Los Angeles and New York City. His clients include Nike, FedEx, Sony, AT&T, Blue Cross, Epson, and others. He is also the president of Mason Editions, producing and distributing fine art posters. He is a ten-time recipient of the Communication Arts Award of Excellence, and has also received the Clio, One Show, Art Directors Club, Photo Design, PDN/Nikon, Creativity Award, IPC Industry Leadership Award, and others. His work has been profiled in Studio Photography & Design, In Focus, Photo District News, Rangefinder, and other industry publications. His repertoire includes group and solo shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Monterey, St. Louis, and New York City.

 

Jeff is a professor and long-time faculty member of the Art Center College of Design, teaching courses on technical, creative, and business topics. He is the founder of the Digital Technology Advisory Council and an active member of the Art Center’s Intellectual Property Committee. He conducts workshops and seminars on creativity, copyright, and licensing for artists’ groups and trade shows nationwide, including PhotoPlus Expo and others.
