Don’t be shy — we’d like to have as many members as possible to show the strength, talent and professionalism of ASMP. What Every Photographer Should Know About Copyright
Speakers: Richard Kelly and Susan Carr
Track: Software + Workflow
Sponsored by ASMP

In a follow up to their highly acclaimed presentation at Houston FotoFest, ASMP education director Susan Carr and ASMP president Richard Kelly present a two-hour seminar all about copyright. Topics to be addressed include: an explanation of what can be copyrighted and what those rights are; a brief history of how copyright law has evolved; a discussion about Fair Use; how to define an infringement; and what is the Copyright War? Carr and Kelly will also shed light on artist considerations specifically related to copyright in the age of digital distribution and will cover solutions pioneered by organizations such as Creative Commons, PLUS and Public Knowledge. Finally, they will review the basics of copyright registration and discuss why all photographers who value their work should bother to register their images. With the proposed Orphan Works and other business pressures looming over your photo ownership, this is a seminar not to be missed.

Thursday, Oct 28, 2010 — 3:45 PM to 5:45 PM
Reviving Creativity
Speaker: Sean Kernan, Photographer
Track: The Art of Photography
Sponsored by ASMP

When photography becomes our job, the early, pure excitement we get from image-making can get pushed aside. We shift from exploring our own vision to recreating someone else’s. That’s a different game, and our creative liveliness can get lost. In time we wake up and ask ourselves: Where did the fun go? The fun is still there and this presentation takes us back to experience it, with explanations and exercises that recall our early excitement, that show its importance to our photography, and that look at ways to bring this excitement back to our life-and to our photography. If you have gone from excited seeing to just taking workmanlike pictures over the years, this is a chance to go back and rediscover your beginnings.
